
CHEROKEE COUNTY
Cherokee County has seen substantial growth in the past decade. Cherokee County was formed in 1830 from Cherokee Indian lands and was later divided into 24 additional counties. According to 2007 Census estimates, it is the seventh most populous county in Georgia and is the sixth most populous in the 10-county Atlanta region. At 424 square miles, Cherokee ranks 51st (out of 159) in the state in area and is the third largest county in the 10-county region. Cities
Cherokee County is home to 5 incorporated cities. Canton is the county seat. The population was 7,709 at the 2000 census. In 2005, Canton was the fastest growing city in Georgia and the 5th fastest growing city (10,000 or more population) in the United States. Other cities within the county are Woodstock, Holly Springs, Ball Ground, and Waleska.
Shopping & RecreationCherokee County is home to numerous restaurants, recreational, and shopping destinations. Located in Woodstock off Highway 92 (a main east-west artery that stretches across northern Atlanta) and Interstate 575, is a major shopping destination including national retailers like Kohl's, SuperTarget, Old Navy, Ulta, BJ's Wholesale, Lowes, Office Depot, Petsmart, Home Depot, and more! In the county seat of Canton, a brand new development named Canton MarketPlace is about to open and will offer Canton residents stores like Kohl's, SuperTarget, Lowe's, Ulta, Dick's Sporting Goods, Best Buy, Books A Million, TJ Maxx, Bed, Bath & Beyond, and more! In addition, an Avenues project which will be developed by Cousins Properties is planned in the Towne Lake area that will bring additional upscale shopping to the area.
Lake Allatoona, a 12,010-acre lake, is the center of recreational activities in Cherokee County. The lake was built in 1950 and today provides power for more than 2,000 homes in the area. It is best known for the many recreational opportunities it provides its visitors. With more than 12,000 acres of water surface available, Allatoona is large enough to accommodate a variety of activities.
